When budgets get tight, teachers are the first to go. And because of how the teacher contract is structured, it's the newest teachers who leave first — teachers who could otherwise be serving our kids for decades to come.
Small adjustments now mean we avoid painful choices later. I'm running to build a sustainable funding plan for Cohasset's schools.

Last year I was elected to the school committee. I ran because schools were over budget by nearly $1 million dollars the year before. This required a bailout via a special transfer at Town Meeting. I was concerned that the schools were not operating sustainably and the future education of my two children was in jeopardy.
This year we monitored our budget continuously and today the schools are projected to land actual costs within 1% of the budget, possibly with a small surplus. We built an FY27 budget that took a hard look at every expense. We didn't do this alone: the leadership of our Superintendent, Dr. Shannon, and the invaluable partnership with Cohasset teachers led us to a budget that preserved positions and services even though funding was tighter than ever.
With the schools currently operating on budget, and the FY27 budget now secured, I'm turning my focus to the future — building a 5-year plan to ensure our schools can continue to deliver one of the best educational experiences in the Commonwealth. I had planned on doing this from the School Committee, but things changed.
We need to raise taxes to meet the needs of our schools. Over the next few years tax revenues are projected to increase 3.5% per year. Now that we have very tight, line-item accurate budgeting, I can confidently say that the schools will need more than that to remain on course. If we don't address this now the schools will have to start making sacrifices that may severely damage the quality of education in our town.

We don't need drastic action. We need a smart plan, started early:
